Comparison One
So far we have studied 3 dystopian societies. "Harrison Bergeron", "The Lottery", and The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm.
What 3 elements of dystopian societies do these 3 share.
1. Propaganda is used in "Harrison Bergeron" and "The Lottery". The propaganda in "Harrison Bergeron" is that if they start competing with one another they will go into the Dark Ages, where there life would supposedly be miserable. In "The Lottery" the propaganda is if they give up the Black Box their lives would be miserable also. They think they will have to live caves. This is very similar to the short story "Harrison Bergeron". The propaganda in The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm is that the Masks are going to take over the world, but General Matsika wants to stop the propaganda.
2. The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm and "The Lottery" both do not have constant surveillance. The General does not put up a whole bunch of cameras, or spies to watch people, his only concern is having all the gangs stopped. and "The Lottery", they go out with there daily lives except for one day of the year, they have no concern of them having to be watched. "Harrison Bergeron" they do be watched, but not all the time. They go on patrol I guess if they catch them they get in trouble.
3. In the stories "Harrison Bergeron", "The Lottery", and The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm. They all are not allowed to have independent thought or freedom In "Harrison Bergeron", mental handicaps make you not able to think right. In The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm, Matsika doesn't wan't the gangs to be free. In "The Lottery", most people think its bad to give up the black box.

Comparison 2
1. Which of the 11 elements of Dystopian societies is most evident in
- Harrison Bergeron
- The Lottery
- The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm
The most evident in Harrison Bergeron, is propaganda is used to control citizens. George says "If I tried to take my handicaps off and got away with it,m other people will get away with it also,. And pretty soon we will be in the Dark Ages again. George thinks that if people compete they will be in a bad world. There are no sports or anything in Harrison Bergeron because Diana Moon Glampers is giving out propaganda and the people are eating it up. If somebody is stronger, smarter, or better than the average person at something then they put handicaps on them. They don't care if they are dumb or just average, as long as the ones above average are brought down.
The most evident in The Lottery is citizens live in a dehumanized state. They have this box called the Black Box. The mayor puts a bunch of blank slips of paper in the box. Then on one piece of paper he puts a black dot. The father or husband draws for each household. Whoever has the dot for the household the family goes next. Whoever has the dot in the family gets tied up to a pole and the people gather up stones to throw at the person. They don't even care about killing one of them. They think it is normal.
The most evident in The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm is there is a person or idea that is worshipped by society. The idea is that they worship religion. Even General Matsika uses the Mellower to calm his family. The Masks believe in the Gondwana gods, they believe the gods are sleeping so they need a sacrifice. The more pain the sacrifice takes the more likely the gods will wake up. The people in Zimbabwe and Gondwana are very strong supporters to the gods.
